Vienna, 17 April, 2012 – The International Press Institute (IPI) today announced the promotions of Anthony Mills to Acting Deputy Director, and Barbara Trionfi to Press Freedom Manager.

Also announced was the creation of a new role, Manager of Communications and Philanthropic Enterprise, filled by IPI’s newest staff member Bruce Blake.

“These individuals are each dedicated to our work to protect, broaden and consolidate global press freedom and the right to free speech,” noted IPI Executive Director Alison Bethel McKenzie. “We welcome them, and look forward to putting their unique ideas, skills and experience to good use, both for our members, and for those who put their lives at risk every day to protect these important freedoms in countries around the world.”

Mr. Mills, a former CNN correspondent in Lebanon, assumes the deputy directorship after leading the Institute’s press freedom staff since 2009 as press freedom & communications manager.

In his new role he will oversee the operation of the organization in the executive director’s absence and will serve as liaison with members and the IPI board of directors on key initiatives.

In addition to mantaining her duties as press freedom adviser for Asia and the Pacific, Ms. Trionfi also assumes the role of Press Freedom Manager. She leads a diverse, talented team of Press Freedom Advisors dedicated to Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa, the Middle East, Europe and North America. Additional responsibilities include issue-specific projects and high- profile press freedom missions to countries around the world.

Mr. Blake assumes responsibility for the Institute’s communications, member relations, fundraising and outreach efforts, and joins IPI’s leadership team with a depth of experience in marketing communications, public relations and public affairs, including roles at IBM, the American Red Cross and the Boston Police Department. Mr. Blake will also oversee IPI’s social media efforts.
